Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi Wins Men’s 100m at Prefontaine Classic

Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi stunned reigning world champion Oblique Seville to claim a memorable 100m victory in Oregon.

Kanyinsola Ajayi produced the biggest win of his career after clocking 9.84 seconds to win the men’s 100m at the 2026 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. The 21-year-old overtook Jamaica’s Oblique Seville midway through the race before pulling clear to secure victory.

Seville finished second in 9.89 seconds, while American sprinter Christian Coleman placed third in 9.95 seconds. Kenneth Bednarek came fourth with 9.96 seconds in a world-class field.

Ajayi’s winning time is the second-fastest 100m performance of the 2026 season, behind only Seville’s 9.82 seconds. The Nigerian said he was pleased to execute his race plan and continue his impressive form on one of athletics’ biggest stages.

The victory follows Ajayi’s triumph at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, further cementing his place among the world’s leading sprinters ahead of the major championships later this season.

Ajayi’s latest performance strengthens Nigeria’s growing presence in global sprinting and signals his arrival as a genuine medal contender.
