Trump Praises Netanyahu, Meets Syrian President at NATO Summit

Donald Trump praised Israel’s prime minister, predicted an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, and defended US actions against Iran during talks with Syria’s new leader.

US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that Israel will withdraw its ground troops from Lebanon, saying relations between the two countries were improving.

Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing him as a “great wartime prime minister.” He also suggested Netanyahu deserved public support ahead of Israel’s upcoming elections, despite recent disagreements over Israel’s military actions in Lebanon.

Trump later met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the summit. During the meeting, he defended last year’s US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, insisting the country’s nuclear material remained buried too deep underground for anyone except the United States to access.

Asked whether Washington would consider sending ground troops into Iran, Trump ruled out the possibility, saying such a move would only happen if Iran was “completely eliminated” or a new agreement was reached.

Trump’s remarks come after weeks of tensions between Washington and Tel Aviv over the Iran conflict, while regional security and Iran’s nuclear programme remain key issues at the NATO summit.
