The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has directed troops engaged in counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations to immediately engage terrorists and bandits without waiting for further instructions from their superiors.
The minister issued the directive on Wednesday in Sokoto during the commissioning of new security assets procured by the state government. He warned that any security operative who refuses to act under the excuse of awaiting orders would face serious consequences.
Minister Gives New Directive to Troops
Addressing military personnel at the event, Musa stressed that troops must respond decisively whenever they encounter terrorists or armed bandits in the course of their operations.
He said security personnel already deployed to conflict areas have the authority to neutralise criminal elements without seeking additional clearance.
“Once you are deployed, do not wait for any order from anybody to shoot any bandit or any terrorist.”
The minister added that hesitation during operations could undermine ongoing efforts to restore peace in affected communities.
Warning Against Delayed Response
Musa warned that any operative who deliberately refuses to engage terrorists while claiming to be waiting for orders would be treated as aiding criminal elements.
“Anybody who refuses to shoot or kill any bandit or terrorist in the name of waiting for an order, we will treat you like a bandit. This is a general order.”
According to him, security forces must remain proactive if Nigeria is to overcome terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes.
Sokoto Unveils ₦27.6bn Security Assets
The directive came as the Sokoto State Government unveiled a ₦27.6 billion security intervention package to strengthen security operations across the state.
The package includes armoured personnel carriers, tactical vehicles and 300 motorcycles for security agencies. In addition, Musa commissioned the equipment at the Giginya Memorial Stadium in the presence of senior military officers, security chiefs, traditional rulers and government officials.
FG Intensifies Fight Against Insecurity
The Federal Government has continued to strengthen security operations across different parts of the country through new military strategies, equipment and collaboration with state governments.
Meanwhile, the latest directive underscores the government’s determination to intensify the fight against terrorism and banditry as security agencies sustain operations in several troubled states.
