The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 1,300 personnel across Edo State ahead of Saturday’s local government election. The deployment forms part of efforts to ensure a peaceful, credible and violence-free poll.
The officers will cover the state’s three senatorial districts and protect lives, property and critical national assets throughout the election.
NSCDC Assures Residents of Tight Security
The command’s spokesperson, Ogbebor Efosa, announced the deployment in a statement issued on Wednesday.
He said the State Commandant, Akintayo Ayinla, had concluded all security arrangements for the election. According to him, the command remains fully prepared to support a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
“The command is fully prepared to discharge its constitutional mandate and provide a secure environment for a peaceful electoral process.”
Political Parties Warned Against Violence
The NSCDC urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to obey the Electoral Act and conduct themselves peacefully.
Furthermore, the command warned against violence, voter intimidation and other forms of electoral malpractice that could disrupt the exercise.
It also encouraged residents to cooperate with security agencies and report any suspicious activity before or during the election.
Security Agencies to Work Together
The command said it would work closely with other security agencies to maintain law and order across the state.
Meanwhile, the NSCDC encouraged eligible voters to participate in the election without fear, assuring them that security personnel would remain on the ground throughout the exercise.
Focus Shifts to Saturday’s Poll
Political parties have concluded campaigns ahead of Saturday’s election, while security agencies continue to strengthen preparations across Edo State.
Ultimately, the local government poll will determine the leadership of the state’s 18 local government areas and test the preparedness of security agencies to deliver a peaceful electoral process.
