Donald Trump says he no longer believes the US-Iran ceasefire agreement has any future.
Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, US President Donald Trump said the ceasefire between the United States and Iran is “over” and dismissed further negotiations as pointless. He accused Iran of acting in bad faith and claimed its leaders repeatedly denied agreements after talks had been concluded.
Trump said US negotiators could continue discussions if they wished but insisted he no longer saw value in engaging with Tehran. He also criticised Iran’s leadership, describing them as dishonest and warning that they could not be trusted.
“It’s a very interesting question. To me, I think it’s over.”I don’t want to deal with them anymore, they’re scum. You know what scum is? They’re scum. They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people. And they’re vicious, violent people.”And if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it. As far as I’m concerned it’s over.”I’ll speak to our negotiators, they want to negotiate, they’re good people. Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, but they have to come back to me. As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them. They’re liars.”We make a deal. If I make a deal with him [pointing at Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte], we have a deal. He goes out, he talks. We [US and Iran] make a deal, everyone’s agreed, no nuclear weapon.”We make a deal. They [Iran] go outside, talk to the press, they say ‘we never even talked about it’. There’s something wrong with them. They’re cuckoo. As far as I’m concerned, it’s over.”Trump is then asked if talks will resume.”I don’t care, they can talk. But I think they’re wasting their time. They’re a bunch of lying guys.”
The comments come weeks after Washington and Tehran agreed to a memorandum of understanding aimed at reducing tensions and limiting Iran’s nuclear programme. Recent military exchanges and attacks in the Strait of Hormuz have further strained relations.
Trump’s remarks raise fresh doubts about the future of US-Iran diplomacy as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.
