Emergency crews are searching for missing workers after a deadly fire at a building under construction in central Brussels.
Several people have died after a fire broke out at a high-rise building under construction in central Brussels, Belgian authorities have confirmed.
The blaze erupted on Tuesday at the Oxy Tower, a mixed-use development in the city centre. Firefighters quickly brought the flames under control. However, they later discovered that the fire had spread into the building’s lift shafts.
Rescue teams found one of two trapped lifts and discovered several bodies inside. Officials have not confirmed the exact death toll. At least six people remain unaccounted for, raising fears that more victims could be found.
Recovery operations have been slowed by heavy debris and dangerous conditions inside the building. Authorities said the search will continue for several hours.
Two people were taken to hospital with severe burns. A firefighter also received treatment after being exposed to extreme heat.
The Oxy Tower is located about 500 metres from Brussels’ Grand Place. The project is expected to include apartments, a hotel, restaurants and bars once completed.
Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever and King Philippe visited the scene, while Brussels Mayor Philippe Close praised emergency responders for their efforts under difficult conditions. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
