A teacher accused of flogging a 12-year-old pupil to death at a school in Anambra State has surrendered to the police after days of search operations.

The suspect, Mrs Dim Ebere, 47, reported to the Neni Police Station in Anaocha Local Government Area. Authorities accuse her of flogging the boy, who later died from injuries allegedly sustained during the incident.

Teacher turns herself in

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the development in a statement released on Saturday by its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

According to Ikenga, the suspect surrendered after the command’s Safe School Protection Squad intensified efforts to locate her. Officers from the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters also joined the operation. In addition, community leaders and other stakeholders in Adazi-Ani supported the search.

Investigation continues

Police officers are currently holding the suspect in custody. Detectives will later transfer her to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka to conclude the investigation.

Meanwhile, the command praised the Adazi-Ani community, the traditional institution and other stakeholders for their cooperation. It said their support contributed significantly to the suspect’s surrender.

Police promise justice

The command assured the deceased pupil’s family that detectives would pursue the case diligently and ensure justice.

Furthermore, police urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands. They also encouraged members of the public to provide useful information that could support the ongoing investigation.
