Paul University, Awka, has suspended a member of its academic staff, Venerable Cornelius Eze, over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a student.
The university announced the indefinite suspension on Friday. It said the decision would remain in effect while it completed its disciplinary process. Relevant law enforcement agencies have also begun investigations.
University begins investigation
The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Rev. Godisplan Onukwufor, confirmed that the university had started investigating the allegations.
According to him, management received the report on July 14. It immediately invited security agencies after tensions reportedly rose among students following the incident.
As an initial administrative measure, the university placed Eze on indefinite suspension. The action does not affect the ongoing police investigation or the institution’s disciplinary process.
Video circulates online
Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media allegedly shows the suspended staff member wearing only boxer shorts while leaving his office shortly after the incident.
The video has not been independently verified. However, the university said it was treating the allegations seriously and would allow investigators to establish the facts.
University reaffirms zero-tolerance policy
Paul University said it does not tolerate sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, abuse of office or any conduct that threatens the safety and dignity of students and staff.
The management pledged to follow due process throughout the investigation. It also promised to sanction anyone found culpable under the university’s regulations and Nigerian law.
Furthermore, the institution said it had begun arrangements to provide counselling and therapeutic support for affected students. It added that other members of the university community could also receive support where necessary.
Public urged to avoid speculation
The university urged members of the public to avoid spreading misinformation or making comments that could interfere with the ongoing investigation.
It also assured parents, guardians, students and staff that it would continue to maintain a safe, secure and morally sound learning environment.
The management added that it would provide further updates as investigations progress and when it becomes appropriate to do so.
