BTS have announced they will not submit their music for the 2027 Grammy Awards. The surprise decision comes only one month after the Recording Academy introduced a new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category. Fans had expected the global stars to compete for major awards with their comeback album Arirang. However, the group chose a different path. Their announcement has now sparked fresh conversations across the music industry.
The BTS Members Shared A Joint Message on Instagram
All seven members shared the same message on Instagram. The statement said,
“We have decided not to enter the Grammys this year. I hope that music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language.”
Not A Single Win Despite Five Nominations
Many fans believe BTS were reacting to the new Grammy rule. Songs in the Asian Pop category must include a “meaningful use” of an Asian language. Meanwhile, more than 80 percent of Arirang is sung in English. As a result, their hit single Swim would not qualify for the new award.
Even so, BTS were still expected to receive nominations in top categories. Arirang became one of the best-selling albums of the year. In addition, Swim reached number one in the United States. Despite earning five Grammy nominations since 2020, the group has never won. They closed their message by thanking fans, saying,
“Thank you to Army and everyone who is always with us.”
The Recording Academy has not yet responded to the group’s decision.
BTS are not the first stars to distance themselves from the Grammys. The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, Drake and others have criticised the awards in the past. Still, the Grammys have tried to strengthen ties with K-pop by adding more Korean artists to its voting academy. Recent ceremonies also recognised Rosé and the hit song Golden from KPop Demon Hunters. Yet the new Asian Pop category continues to divide opinion.
For many fans, BTS’ decision is a strong message that great music should be celebrated without language or regional barriers.
