The Osun State Police Command has arrested the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Teslim Igbalaye, and five others over alleged vote buying ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Police made the arrests during an operation in Osogbo. Officers also recovered cash, Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and a voter register. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, announced the arrests in a statement issued on Wednesday on behalf of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan.
Raid follows intelligence
According to the police, the operation followed credible intelligence on the activities of a suspected criminal group around Oroki Estate in Osogbo.
Officers searched a residential property linked to the SSG. They were looking for a wanted suspect, Abiodun Arowomole, popularly known as Ashipa. Investigators said Arowomole remains on the police watchlist over alleged offences, including murder.
Police recover cash and election materials
During the operation, officers recovered $4,810,500 in cash. They also seized a Dynabook laptop, a photocopy machine, a printer, two Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and a voter register for Wards 1 to 15.
In addition, the command secured all the recovered items for forensic examination. Police arrested six people at the property. They include Teslim Igbalaye, 57; Akande Taiwo, 60; Oladele Abiodun, 38; Adeyemo Lukman, 45; Olaoye Muftau, 50; and Aderemi Musliu, 40.
Detectives probe alleged electoral offences
Investigators said the recovered cash and voter register raised concerns about possible electoral offences.
“The recovery of the cash and the register containing voters’ details raises serious concerns regarding possible electoral offences and other criminal activities,” the statement said.
Consequently, detectives began examining possible violations of the Electoral Act 2022. The investigation focuses on alleged voter inducement through cash or other incentives.
It also covers alleged criminal conspiracy and the suspected harbouring of a wanted person. Meanwhile, forensic experts are analysing the recovered items. Police said the examination could reveal additional offences.
“These are serious allegations with far-reaching implications for public security, the administration of justice, and the credibility of the democratic process,” the statement added.
Commissioner promises thorough investigation
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan said detectives would identify everyone connected to the recovered items. They will also determine where the money came from and how those involved intended to use it.
“I wish to assure the good people of Osun State that the Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its constitutional responsibility to enforce the law without fear or favour,” he said.
Furthermore, Gotan stressed that no individual would receive special treatment because of political affiliation or public office. He added that the police would prosecute anyone found culpable after completing the investigation.
