Gunmen attacked a church in Kogi State on Sunday, kidnapping a pastor, his wife, and several congregants during an early service. The incident occurred at the newly established Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area.
The attack threw the community into confusion. Residents reportedly fled to safety as the gunmen stormed the worship centre.
State Government Responds
Confirming the incident, Kogi Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the attack as “very sad and unfortunate.” He assured residents that authorities are working to rescue the abducted worshippers.
Fanwo said the attackers may have operated from within the community. “Those who struck at Ejiba must have been hiding in the community for some days or in bushes around the village,” he stated. He added that some residents might have noticed unusual movements but failed to raise alarms.
Security Warnings for Residents
The commissioner warned citizens about the dangers of worshipping in unsecured locations. “Worshipping in the bush without security in this era, just weeks after the Kwara church abductions, is not ideal,” he said. He urged people to volunteer intelligence and remain security conscious.
Fanwo also faulted religious leaders who insist on gathering worshippers in unsafe locations. “It’s easy to blame the government, but those suffering in the hands of these criminals are our people. Why won’t we subscribe to wisdom?” he asked.
Measures Taken
He advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and warned against disclosing movements in danger zones. Security agencies and the state government have reportedly taken drastic measures to ensure the safe return of the abducted worshippers.
In summary, the Kogi church attack highlights ongoing security challenges in border communities and reinforces the need for vigilance and cooperation with authorities.
