EFCC Explains Malami Arrest, Says 5 Bail Conditions Unmet

Ex-AGF Malami Rejects Terrorism Financing Allegations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained why it arrested and detained former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami. The Commission said Malami failed to meet five bail conditions attached to his administrative bail.

In a statement released on Saturday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale rejected claims of bias. He described reports linking Malami’s detention to political activities as false.

The EFCC said it questioned Malami on November 28, 2025. After the session, investigators granted him administrative bail. However, the bail came with five clear conditions. Malami has not met any of them.

EFCC Details Bail and Interrogation Timeline

Oyewale explained that administrative bail gives a suspect temporary relief while investigations continue. The suspect must meet all stated conditions to retain the privilege.

Investigators directed Malami to return on December 1, 2025, for further questioning. However, he wrote to the Commission on December 4, asking for time to address health concerns.

The EFCC granted the request on humanitarian grounds. However, Malami did not submit a medical report or proof of illness. He also failed to comply with his bail terms.

EFCC Dismisses Political Bias Allegations

The Commission said it could not allow the delay to stall investigations. As a result, investigators invited Malami again on December 8, 2025. They detained him because he still had not met the five bail conditions.

Oyewale said the EFCC did not revoke Malami’s bail. He also dismissed claims that the Commission restricted Malami from media interviews or political activities.

According to him, the EFCC remains apolitical. It does not consider party affiliation during investigations. He cited the recent arraignment of a former governor from the ruling party as evidence.

EFCC Urges Compliance, Not Media Campaigns

The EFCC advised Malami to focus on meeting the bail conditions he signed on November 28, 2025. The Commission said cooperation with investigators would help his case.

The anti-graft agency reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and due process. It stressed that the law applies equally to all suspects.
