President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to uphold religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, insisting that no citizen should face persecution for practising their faith.
In his 2025 Christmas goodwill message, the president called on Nigerians to reflect on the values of love, peace, and compassion embodied by Jesus Christ. According to him, these values must guide interactions across religious and ethnic divides.
Tinubu said unity remains critical to national stability. Therefore, he urged citizens to respect one another’s beliefs and traditions at all times.
Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Religious Freedom
The president reiterated his administration’s commitment to religious freedom since assuming office in 2023. He said the government continues to prioritise national security, unity, and stability under the constitution.
“As your President, I remain committed to doing everything within my power to enshrine religious freedom in Nigeria,” Tinubu said. “In addition, I will protect all people of different faiths from violence.”
He stressed that all Nigerians have the right to live, worship, and pursue their aspirations in safety and dignity. Consequently, he warned against discrimination based on religion or ethnicity.
Government Engages Faith Leaders
Tinubu disclosed that the federal government continues to engage leaders of Nigeria’s two major religions. According to him, these discussions focus on concerns around religious intolerance and insecurity.
Moreover, the president pledged to deepen collaboration between government and religious institutions. As a result, he said Nigeria would better prevent conflict and promote peaceful coexistence.
Shared Values Must Unite Nigerians
Highlighting the importance of interfaith harmony, Tinubu said shared values of love for God and humanity must continue to bind Nigerians together.
“No one should suffer for professing and practising his faith,” he said. “The love for God and love for humanity lie at the heart of all great religions.”
He added that these shared principles must keep Nigeria united as one indivisible and resilient nation.
Tinubu Commends Christians
The president also commended Christians for their contributions to national development. He praised their efforts in caring for the vulnerable and promoting peace within communities.
According to him, such acts strengthen social cohesion and reflect the true spirit of Christmas.
