The Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strengthen its verification systems and digital infrastructure to safeguard the 2027 general elections.
In a communique issued after its 13th Annual International Conference in Abuja, the association noted that robust verification systems remain essential to prevent technical glitches and build public trust.
Consequently, the association called for complete operational readiness across all electoral portals and digital platforms.
Therefore, INEC must collaborate closely with telecommunications providers to guarantee reliable internet connectivity in rural communities during the polls.
ACSPN Recommends Legislative Reforms and Media Literacy Programs
Addressing electoral communication gaps, the association advocated for comprehensive legal reviews to strengthen the Electoral Act 2022.
Furthermore, scholars urged lawmakers to update regulatory frameworks to cover cybersecurity threats, strategic public relations, and covert digital influence.
“Addressing the digital divide is critical to prevent it from becoming a democratic divide,” the communique stated.
In addition, ACSPN recommended nationwide media literacy campaigns to help citizens identify misinformation, deepfakes, and manipulated online content.
The group emphasized that public awareness campaigns will protect the electorate from falling victim to coordinated digital propaganda.
Deploying Election Observers and Proactive Stakeholder Partnerships
Outlining operational commitments, ACSPN announced plans to deploy certified media observation teams during upcoming election cycles.
According to the association, deploying independent observation teams will provide empirical evidence needed to improve future electoral communication.
“Stakeholders must transition from reactive responses to proactive preparedness ahead of the 2027 polls,” the association added.
Moreover, ACSPN called for stronger research partnerships among communication scholars, regulators, media organizations, and civil society groups.
Finally, the association reaffirmed its dedication to supporting democratic governance through continuous research, policy advocacy, and professional training.
