Aisha Yesufu, activist and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Party, has withdrawn from the race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial ticket of the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
Yesufu announced her decision in an X post on Friday.
The activist had declared interest in the FCT senate seat on May 6 after joining the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
She said her decision to contest was inspired by the leadership experience she gained while in the ADC.
Her withdrawal comes amid speculations that the party had ceded the FCT senatorial ticket to another aspirant, Amanda Pam, who had been a member of the party before Yesufu joined.
NDC NOT CONDUCTING PRIMARY FOR FCT SENATE
In the statement, Yesufu said the NDC had decided not to conduct primaries for the FCT senate seat.
“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the senatorial seat in FCT Abuja,” she said.
“It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives. Go ahead and make your choice known.”
The activist urged her supporters to remain calm and focus on the party’s broader political objectives ahead of the 2027 election.
“I urge each and every one of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture, which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be okay,” she said.
“I appreciate all your support, dedication and commitment towards the #AishaForSenate project.”
Yesufu added that she would continue engaging residents across the six area councils of the FCT.
“In the coming week, I will be returning to all the six area councils, God willing, to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a better FCT,” she said.
