At least 25 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a passenger bus overturned near the coastal town of Boumerdes, east of Algeria’s capital, Algiers.
The deadly crash occurred on Friday when the coach veered off the road and plunged into a ravine. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Algeria’s Civil Protection Department confirmed the death toll but said the cause of the accident has not yet been determined. Authorities have launched an investigation to establish what led to the crash.
Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited the scene shortly after the incident and met with emergency service personnel coordinating rescue efforts.
Images from the crash site showed the heavily damaged bus lying at the bottom of the ravine as rescue teams worked to recover victims and clear the area.
The latest tragedy adds to a series of deadly road accidents in Algeria.
In August last year, 18 people were killed when a bus crashed near Algiers. Four months later, another bus overturned in the southern Bechar region, claiming 14 lives.
Road accidents remain a major concern across the North African country.
According to Algeria’s road safety authorities, 3,838 people were killed and more than 37,000 injured in traffic accidents during the previous year.
Officials have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved road safety measures. This is aimed at reducing the country’s high rate of fatal crashes.
