Angelique Kidjo Becomes First African Musician With Hollywood Star

Angelique Kidjo is making history in Hollywood. The five-time Grammy winner will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday. She becomes the first African musician to receive the honour. Kidjo is also the first Black African recognised on the famous boulevard. The honour celebrates her huge impact on music and global culture.

Born in Benin, Kidjo has enjoyed an international career spanning more than 40 years. Her powerful music has connected with fans across Africa and beyond. Time magazine once called her “Africa’s premier diva.” Over the years, she has also worked with major artists from different parts of the world. Her career has made her one of Africa’s most respected music stars.

Meanwhile, Hollywood Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez praised Kidjo’s remarkable journey.

“Angelique Kidjo’s extraordinary artistry and global influence have inspired audiences across generations and continents,” she said.

Martinez also praised her contributions to music and culture worldwide. At the ceremony, Kidjo will be joined by Oscar-nominated actor Willem Dafoe. Record producer Harvey Mason Jr will also attend the event.

For Kidjo, the historic moment is bigger than her own success. She hopes more African musicians will receive the same recognition in future.

“I may be the first African female singer to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but I am convinced that I will not be the last,” she told AFP.

“Many others will follow, and that fills my heart with joy,” she added.

Her achievement marks another major milestone for African music on the global stage.
