The All Progressives Congress has ordered fresh primary elections in four states following the restoration of four State House of Assembly constituencies by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The APC released its timetable and schedule of activities as it prepares for the 2026 legislative elections and by-elections. The announcement came after INEC restored constituencies that had previously been suppressed in Delta and Kogi states.
APC Schedules Primaries In Delta, Kogi
Following the restoration, the APC directed its chapters in Delta and Kogi states to begin preparations for fresh primary elections. In Delta State, the affected constituencies are Abraka, Isoko North II and Ughelli South II. Yagba West II is the affected constituency in Kogi State.
The party said it would conduct primaries in all four constituencies. The exercise will determine its candidates for the affected State House of Assembly seats. The development is part of the APC’s preparations for the elections that will follow INEC’s restoration of the constituencies.
Four More Constituencies Listed
Beyond the restored constituencies, the APC also scheduled primaries for legislative by-elections in Gombe, Bauchi, Delta and Kano states. In Gombe State, the party listed the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency for the exercise.
The affected constituencies in Bauchi State are Disina and Sakwa. Delta State has Udu State Constituency, while Dawakin Kudu State Constituency is listed in Kano State. The party’s timetable means eight constituencies across five states will now undergo its internal electoral process.
APC Begins 2026 Election Preparations
The fresh primaries will allow the APC to select candidates for the affected constituencies ahead of the 2026 contests. The party’s decision to issue a combined timetable also suggests a coordinated approach to the primary elections across the affected states.
Meanwhile, aspirants seeking the APC’s tickets are expected to begin preparations for the internal contests in their respective constituencies. The primary elections will therefore be an important step for the party as it works to position its candidates ahead of the legislative elections and by-elections.
Conclusion
The APC’s decision follows INEC’s restoration of four State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta and Kogi states. With fresh primaries now scheduled, the party has moved to select candidates for the affected seats while also preparing for other legislative contests in 2026. The outcome of the exercises will determine the APC candidates who will represent the party in the affected constituencies.
