African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has said former President Olusegun Obasanjo does not have enough electoral influence to determine the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku made the statement while speaking with journalists on Wednesday. His comment came amid reports that Obasanjo had declined to endorse his presidential ambition.
Atiku Dismisses Obasanjo’s Electoral Influence
Responding to Obasanjo’s reported position, Atiku said he was not worried about whether the former president would endorse him. The former vice president recalled Obasanjo’s emergence as president in 1999 and claimed that northern voters played a major role in his victory.
“In 1999, he could not even win his own state or the Southwest; it was Arewa that made him President. He possesses no electoral value,” Atiku said.
Atiku and Obasanjo served together as president and vice president between 1999 and 2007. However, the two politicians have had a strained relationship since leaving office.
Atiku Recalls Obasanjo’s Third-Term Bid
Atiku also recalled his opposition to Obasanjo’s attempt to extend his tenure beyond the constitutional limit. He said he opposed the former president’s third-term bid because he believed defending Nigeria’s Constitution and democracy was necessary.
The ADC presidential candidate also spoke about his record of supporting young Nigerians during his time as vice president. According to Atiku, some of the young people who benefited from opportunities during his tenure later became governors, ministers, directors and other public office holders.
Atiku Promises More Opportunities for Young Nigerians
Speaking about the 2027 presidential election, Atiku promised to continue creating opportunities for young Nigerians if elected president. He said young people would have opportunities to serve and take up leadership positions under his administration.
