The match turned in Atletico’s favour when Dean Huijsen fouled Giuliano Simeone in the box. After reviewing the incident, VAR recommended a red card for the Real defender, reducing the hosts to 10 players. Alejandro Grimaldo made the numerical advantage count by sending the resulting penalty into the net.
Atletico extended their lead when Jonathan David met Simeone’s delivery with a sliding finish. It was David’s third goal in as many La Liga appearances.

Real Madrid struggled to build momentum after the dismissal, although they brought Julian Alvarez on soon after Atletico’s second goal. The striker was greeted by boos from sections of the home crowd amid reports that he had tried to force a summer transfer to Barcelona.
The hosts eventually reduced the deficit through Antonio Rudiger, who headed home Bernardo Silva’s free-kick. That goal raised hopes of a late comeback, but Atletico defended resolutely to see out the win and collect all three points.
Real now sit six points behind unbeaten leaders Barcelona, who have won every league match this season. Atletico are one point off the top and one point clear of Real.
