Austria claimed their first World Cup finals victory since 1990 after defeating debutants Jordan 3-1.
Austria made a winning return to the FIFA World Cup by beating Jordan 3-1 in their Group J opener in San Francisco.
Romano Schmid gave Austria the lead in the 21st minute with a superb long-range strike. Jordan responded early in the second half when Ali Olwan curled home an equaliser to bring the match level.
Austria thought they had regained the lead through Marko Arnautovic, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review showed the ball had touched Stefan Posch’s arm in the build-up. The setback proved temporary as Jordan defender Yazan Al Arab accidentally turned the ball into his own net in the 76th minute.
Arnautovic eventually got on the scoresheet in stoppage time, converting a penalty after Saleem Obaid was penalised for handball to seal the victory.
The win marks Austria’s first World Cup finals victory since their 2-1 triumph over the United States on 19 June 1990. It is also their first appearance at the tournament since 1998, giving manager Ralf Rangnick a successful start to the campaign.
Austria will next face defending champions Argentina, while Jordan must secure a positive result against Algeria to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
