Former SGF Babachir Lawal joins the NDC and backs Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). His move comes three months after he left the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Lawal announced his defection in Abuja on Tuesday. He also declared support for the NDC presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to him, Nigerians facing insecurity, hunger and other hardships should support the opposition party.
“Anybody in Nigeria who has the interest of our country at heart… will have no choice but to join a party that represents the future,” Lawal said.
Meanwhile, NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, welcomed Lawal into the party. Dickson described the former SGF as an experienced political mobiliser and activist. He said Lawal would play a leadership role in the party’s activities across the North-East.
“He has seen it all and seen parties that were promising but failed to deliver on the promised change,” Dickson said.
He also said the party expects Lawal to guide its candidates and campaigns in the region.
Lawal’s latest move follows his controversial exit from the ADC. He resigned from the party about three months ago over alleged manipulation of its presidential primary.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Lawal claimed the process was fundamentally flawed. He alleged that some results were altered to favour former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his supporters. Lawal also claimed that declared winners were replaced in areas where voting took place.
His move to the NDC now adds another political figure to the party ahead of the 2027 election.
