Cuba’s delegation walked out of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump described the island as a “failed state” and predicted the fall of its communist government.
The incident occurred during Trump’s address to the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, where he sharply criticised Cuba’s government and said it was facing unprecedented pressure from his administration.
Trump said the Cuban government would “fall” and suggested that negotiations could determine what happens next. He also declared that “freedom will be coming to Cuba” while reiterating his opposition to communism.
The Cuban delegation, led by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, left the assembly chamber during the remarks in protest.
Trump’s comments reflect the increasingly confrontational approach his administration has taken toward Cuba. Washington has maintained its long-standing trade embargo against the island while pressing for major political and economic changes. US law continues to provide for a broad embargo on trade with Cuba.
However, the Trump administration has not provided a detailed public outline of what political changes it expects in Cuba or whether the existing government could remain in some form.
