Former Senator representing Katsina South, Bello Mandiya, has died in Abuja at the age of 62.
Mandiya died on Monday, September 7, 2026, according to the Katsina State Government. Ibrahim Mohammed, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dikko Radda, confirmed the death.
Mohammed also said the former lawmaker would be buried in Abuja on Tuesday. However, the government did not disclose the cause of his death.
Governor Radda Mourns Mandiya
Governor Radda expressed shock over the former senator’s death and described it as a major loss to Katsina State and Nigeria.
“I received with shock and deep sadness the news of the death of Senator Bello Mandiya. His passing is a great loss to Katsina State and Nigeria,” Radda said in a statement issued by his spokesperson.
The governor praised Mandiya’s years of public service at both the state and federal levels. He also described him as a committed public servant whose contributions would remain remembered.
“Senator Mandiya dedicated part of his life to public service and served our people with commitment. His contributions will remain remembered,” he said.
Radda extended his condolences to Mandiya’s family, former Governor Aminu Masari, the people of Katsina South, his political associates and his former colleagues in the Senate.
He also prayed for the repose of the former lawmaker’s soul and asked God to give his family the strength to bear the loss.
Mandiya’s Political Career
Before his election to the Senate, Mandiya served as Chief of Staff to former Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari. He later contested the Katsina South senatorial election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress in 2019 and won the seat.
Mandiya represented Katsina South in the Ninth National Assembly from 2019 to 2023. During his time in the Senate, he served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Water Resources. Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan described him as a thorough lawmaker and a committed public servant.
His political career therefore spanned both the Katsina State Government and the National Assembly, where he represented the interests of his constituents for four years.
Mandiya’s Death
News of Mandiya’s death has drawn condolences from political leaders and associates across Katsina State.
Governor Radda described his passing as a loss to the state and the country. He also recalled the former senator’s contribution to public service before and during his time in the National Assembly.
Mandiya’s burial is expected to take place in Abuja on Tuesday, according to the Katsina State Government.
