The death toll from rain-triggered landslides in southeastern China has risen to 16 after search teams recovered another body in Jiangxi province.
The landslides struck Suichuan County after days of heavy rain linked to Typhoon Saudel. State media said the deaths occurred across three towns in the county.
Gaoping town recorded the highest number of deaths, with 13 people killed in a mudslide, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Two other people died in Zuo’an town, while one person was killed in Tanghu town.
More than 18,000 people have been evacuated from Suichuan County as authorities respond to the disasters. Two additional deaths were previously reported in neighbouring Hunan province following heavy rainfall brought by the typhoon.
CCTV said the rains triggered landslides and other disasters in Hunan but did not specify the cause of the two deaths. Typhoon Saudel first made landfall in Zhejiang province on August 28 before making another landfall there. It later struck Fujian province as a tropical storm on September 3.
The latest deaths highlight the risks posed by prolonged heavy rainfall after tropical systems move inland. Authorities continue to search affected areas while evacuated residents remain away from communities hit by the landslides.
