Afrobeats star Davido has explained why he wrote to US President Donald Trump about the upcoming Osun governorship election. His decision sparked a heated debate among Nigerians online.
In his open letter, Davido urged Trump to use his influence to support a free and fair election in Osun. However, many Nigerians questioned why he approached a foreign leader instead of President Bola Tinubu.
The singer later responded to critics on X, formerly known as Twitter. One user asked,
“Is everything okay, David?”
Davido replied,
“So I can’t tweet my president again?”
Another user shared a photo of him with Tinubu and asked,
“If Trump is your president, who is this?”
Davido then gave a direct response.
“He’s my president too i get dual citizenship..any problem?” he wrote.
His comment made it clear that he sees both Trump and Tinubu as his presidents because of his dual citizenship.
Beyond the online argument, Davido also has a strong personal connection to Osun politics. He is the nephew of Ademola Adeleke, the former Osun State governor and current governor. As a result, the election holds more personal meaning for the singer.
The debate has now added another layer to the growing conversation around the Osun election. For Davido, however, his message appears simple; he believes his American citizenship gives him a voice to address Trump, while his Nigerian citizenship connects him to Tinubu and events at home.
