State Moves to Boost Power Supply
The Enugu State government has announced plans to build a 660-megawatt coal-fired power plant. Governor Peter Mbah said construction will begin in July.
He shared the update during a meeting with the Organised Private Sector Nigeria in Enugu.
Project Targets Economic Growth
Mbah said the project supports his plan to grow the state’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion. He added that the plant will deliver stable and affordable electricity for businesses and residents.
According to him, the project will take about 24 months to complete after construction begins.
Electricity Market Expansion
The governor explained that Enugu has already set up its own electricity market. This followed changes to Nigeria’s power laws that allow states to participate in electricity generation and distribution.
He said the new plant marks the next step in producing power locally.
Coal Quality to Support Project
Mbah addressed concerns about coal usage. He said Enugu coal has low sulphur content and high energy value.
He explained that the state will use its resources to generate power instead of exporting raw coal.
Private Sector Endorses Governor
The Organised Private Sector Nigeria endorsed Mbah for a second term during the visit.
The group includes bodies such as the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association.
Members praised the administration for improving security, infrastructure, and business conditions.
Focus on Investment and Innovation
Mbah highlighted other initiatives aimed at attracting investors. These include a one-stop investment centre, a technology incubation hub, and plans for an artificial intelligence institute in partnership with the Nigerian Communications Commission.
He said the state wants to play a key role in the global AI economy.
Business Leaders Applaud Reforms
Business leaders at the meeting commended the government’s efforts. They noted improvements in road networks, security, and access to commercial areas.
They also urged continued support for small businesses through financing and policy reforms.
