Nigerian singer Fave has opened up about the challenges female artists face in the music industry. She believes women often have to work harder to gain attention for their music.
According to the singer, female musicians face more scrutiny than their male counterparts. Their looks, bodies, clothes and attractiveness can sometimes become bigger talking points than their talent. Fave said this pressure makes it harder for female artists to break through.
“It’s harder for female artists to blow. Female artists aren’t measured by talent but by what they wear. If your tummy isn’t flat… it’s never really about the music; it’s more about people’s sexual desires or their fantasies about you,” she said.
Fave also criticised the pressure on women to dress a certain way before people take their music seriously. She said this focus can shift attention away from their creativity and hard work.
“And I think that right there is a problem, because it becomes more about how decently you are dressed before people listen to you,” she added.
Meanwhile, Fave noted that male artists do not face the same level of scrutiny.
“But when it comes to men, they aren’t held to that same standard,” she said.
She also praised female performers, saying they bring strong energy to the stage.
“When it comes to performances, female artists perform better,” Fave added.
