Nigerian comedian MC Monica has raised the alarm after allegedly losing ₦1.8 million to a fake FRSC traffic fine message.
The comedian said he received a text claiming he had committed a road traffic offence. It also directed him to a website to pay the alleged fine. Thinking the message was genuine, MC Monica clicked the link and paid just ₦5.
However, the situation took a shocking turn the next morning. According to him, a huge amount of money had disappeared from his bank account. The comedian shared his frustration while questioning how the scammers accessed his funds.
“I don’t know who to blame, whether it was my service provider or the Road Safety officials,” he said.
MC Monica said the message looked like it came from the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC. After clicking the link, he made the small payment requested. He later discovered that about ₦1.8 million was missing from his account. His experience has now drawn fresh attention to a scam targeting Nigerian motorists.
Meanwhile, FRSC has warned Nigerians about the fraudulent messages. The agency said scammers send fake traffic offence alerts and direct victims to a website impersonating FRSC. The Corps also stressed that the website has no connection with the agency.
FRSC advised motorists to avoid suspicious links and unsolicited payment requests. It also warned Nigerians against sharing their banking details through such platforms. The agency identified its official website as frsc.gov.ng.
As similar scams continue to surface, motorists should verify traffic notices before making any payment.
