Lagos-Calabar Highway Expansion May Affect 2,700 Buildings, 10,800 Homes

Calabar Highway

The Federal Government’s plan to expand the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has sparked fresh concerns, with officials estimating that about 2,700 buildings containing nearly 10,800 homes could fall within the proposed expansion corridor.

The planned expansion centres on a 15-metre setback along both sides of the highway. According to the government, the additional space will accommodate service lanes and other supporting infrastructure needed for the project.

Umahi Explains Need for 15-Metre Setback

Minister of Works David Umahi said the setback forms part of the approved highway design and is not a new policy introduced after construction began.

He explained that the corridor will accommodate service lanes, drainage systems, pedestrian walkways and utility infrastructure. According to him, these facilities will improve traffic flow, enhance safety and support future development along the coastal route.

“The 15-metre setback is for the service lane. It is part of the highway design and not an arbitrary decision by the government.”

Umahi also assured affected communities that the government would continue consultations before taking further steps.

Thousands of Homes May Feel the Impact

Government estimates show that about 2,700 buildings lie within the proposed setback. Together, the affected structures contain nearly 10,800 housing units.

However, the minister stressed that the figures do not mean every building will face immediate demolition. He said the government will follow legal procedures and assess each property before making final decisions.

“We are not out to punish anybody. We are implementing a project that will serve Nigerians for generations.”

He added that the government would handle compensation in line with the law wherever it becomes necessary.

Residents Seek More Clarity

The proposal has heightened anxiety among many residents and property owners living along the highway corridor.

Many fear they could lose their homes or businesses if the expansion proceeds. Meanwhile, several stakeholders have urged the Federal Government to provide clearer information on compensation, timelines and the overall implementation process.

They also called for continued engagement with affected communities to reduce uncertainty and build public confidence.

FG Defends Strategic Highway Project

Despite the growing concerns, the Federal Government insists that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway remains one of Nigeria’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

Umahi said the highway will strengthen connectivity between coastal states, reduce travel time and stimulate tourism and economic activities. Ultimately, he maintained that the project will deliver long-term benefits while complying with all legal requirements.
