FG to extend NYSC orientation to six weeks, redesign uniform in new reform move

NYSC

The federal government has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), extending the orientation camp from three to six weeks and introducing a redesigned uniform.

Ayodele Olawande, minister of youth development, announced the decision in a post on X on Monday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the reforms.

According to the minister, the changes mark the first comprehensive review of the scheme since its establishment 53 years ago.

Six-week orientation camp

Olawande said the orientation programme will now last six weeks.

He added that the new curriculum will place greater emphasis on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills and specialised career streams.

FG introduces skills-based deployment

Furthermore, the minister said corps members will receive primary assignments based on their academic background and career paths.

He added that the government has also approved a technology-driven call-up process and risk-sensitive deployment to improve the safety of corps members.

Uniform redesign, new graduation ceremony

Meanwhile, the reforms include a redesigned NYSC uniform and the replacement of the traditional passing-out parade with a graduation ceremony.

Olawande said the new uniform is intended to reflect professionalism and national pride.

He added that the government will also introduce a national grading and certification system to improve camp standards.

AGF to amend NYSC Act

The minister said the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development have been directed to begin amending the NYSC Act and its regulations to give legal backing to the reforms.

“This is more than a reform of an institution,” Olawande said.

“It is an investment in Nigeria’s greatest asset, our young people.”

“The future of the NYSC begins now, and it is brighter, more relevant and more impactful than ever.”
