The Grammy Awards have added five new categories for 2027, expanding recognition for global music genres after the success of the African music category.
The Grammy Awards are making room for more global sounds. Ahead of the 2027 ceremony, the Recording Academy has announced five new categories. They include Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best Latin Song, Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, and Best Traditional Folk Album. As a result, more artists and musical traditions will gain recognition on music’s biggest stage.
This move comes only two years after the Grammys introduced Best African Music Performance. The category debuted at the 66th Grammy Awards in 2024. It was created to celebrate music rooted in African traditions and culture. Since then, the category has helped shine a bigger spotlight on African sounds across the world.
South African star Tyla made history by winning the first award with her hit song Water. She beat strong competition from Nigerian stars including Burna Boy, Davido, Ayra Starr, Asake, and Olamide. Later, Nigerian singer Tems claimed the prize in 2025 with Love Me JeJe. Meanwhile, Tyla returned in 2026 to win again with PUSH 2 START, becoming the category’s first two-time winner.
The success of African music globally played a major role in these changes. Genres like Afrobeats and amapiano continue to attract listeners worldwide. Now, the Recording Academy is expanding its reach even further.
When the 2027 Grammy Awards arrive, fans will see five new winners added to the list, reflecting the growing diversity of music around the world.
