Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi and striker Mason Greenwood have been punished by UEFA following a brawl after their Champions League play-off win over Lyon.
Guendouzi received a four-match European ban, although two matches have been suspended. He was also fined €50,000 (£43,000).
Greenwood was handed a one-match suspended ban and fined €30,000 (£26,000). Both suspended sanctions are subject to a one-year probationary period.
Lyon goalkeeper coach Antonio Ferreira received the heaviest punishment. He was banned for five matches, with two suspended, after UEFA classified his conduct as “serious assault”.
Chaos broke out after Fenerbahce progressed to the Champions League league phase beating Lyon 3-2 on aggregate. UEFA said Guendouzi was punished for insulting people present at the match, provoking spectators and breaching its basic rules of decent conduct. Whereas Greenwood was sanctioned for violating the basic rules of decent conduct.
UEFA also fined both Fenerbahce and Lyon €50,000 each for their teams’ conduct. Fenerbahce said it was reviewing the decisions and the reasoning behind them through its legal department. The Turkish club added that it would pursue the necessary arbitration and appeal procedures before UEFA’s Appeals Committee.
The sanctions now leave both Fenerbahce players facing restrictions in European competition, although the suspended portions of their bans will not take effect unless further disciplinary conditions are breached during the probationary period.
