Nigerian influencer Ola of Lagos has revealed why he does not live in any house he owns. The social media star said he prefers renting because it keeps him motivated to work harder. Speaking on the KK Show podcast, Ola explained that owning a home could make him too comfortable. According to him, paying rent gives him a financial target that pushes him to hustle.
“That is why I don’t sleep in any of my house, I will relax. Rent, pay rent, so that when the year ends, you know you want to pay 50 million. Pay. So that you go know say you have to work,” he said.
However, Ola stressed that his approach only reflects his personal situation. He urged people not to copy his financial choices without considering their own circumstances.
“It’s fine to stay in your house you bought, but this is my own opinion, so don’t let that judge your life,” he said.
Ola of Lagos also warned against following financial advice blindly because everyone’s reality differs.
“It’s just like coming on the internet saying, ‘Oh, if you make your first money, don’t buy house, buy car. Oh, don’t buy car, buy house.’ No. It depends on your reality,” Ola explained.
He believes both cars and houses can support wealth creation. For some people, a car could become the tool that helps them make more money.
Ola also shared an example from his mentor to explain his point.
“Some people now, na the car wey they go buy, go buy them houses. My mentor online, he said his first car bought him all his houses. Yeah. So look at your current situation,” he said.
His message is simple: personal finances have no one-size-fits-all formula. Instead, people should consider their income, goals and current needs before making major financial decisions.
