Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers state, says he withdrew from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in the interest of peace, stability, and unity in the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Fubara said his decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family members, friends and political associates.
The governor said personal ambition must sometimes give way for the greater good of the people.
“Leadership is ultimately about sacrifice,” he said.
“There comes a time when personal ambition must yield to the greater good of the people.”
Fubara added that Rivers state is bigger than any individual political aspiration.
“At this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he said.
The governor thanked his supporters for standing by him throughout the political process and acknowledged the sacrifices many had made for his ambition.
“I understand the disappointment, the anger, and the pain many of you may feel,” he said.
“Much has indeed been invested and much sacrificed along the way.”
RESTRAINTS IN FACE OF PRESSURE
Fubara also hinted at political pressures surrounding the contest but said he chose restraint for the sake of peace.
“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace,” he said.
“Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose.”
The governor expressed appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, president of Nigeria, for his support and encouragement.
He further urged members of the APC to remain loyal and united ahead of the election.
“The APC remains our collective home,” he said.
Fubara insisted that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as weakness or surrender.
“I stepped aside not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice,” he said.
He added that he remains committed to serving the people of Rivers state until the end of his tenure.
