The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for improved funding and better staff welfare as preparations for the 2027 general election gather pace.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, raised the concerns during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu, in Abuja. He said the commission needs stronger financial support to deliver credible elections.
INEC raises concern over staff exodus
Amupitan said the commission has continued to lose experienced personnel to migration and other opportunities.
According to him, the development has created gaps in the commission’s workforce and increased the need for improved staff welfare.
He stressed that retaining skilled workers remains essential as INEC intensifies preparations for the 2027 polls.
Calls for improved funding
The INEC chairman explained that rising operational costs have placed additional pressure on the commission.
He therefore appealed for stronger financial support to enable INEC to carry out its constitutional responsibilities effectively.
Amupitan also said adequate funding would improve election planning, logistics and staff capacity ahead of the 2027 general election.
RMAFC pledges support
Responding, RMAFC Chairman Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu acknowledged the commission’s concerns and assured INEC of the commission’s continued cooperation.
He said both institutions would continue to work together to strengthen public service delivery and support Nigeria’s democratic process.
Focus shifts to 2027 polls
INEC has stepped up preparations for the 2027 general election in recent months through consultations with key stakeholders and institutions.
The commission believes that improved funding, stronger staff welfare and better planning will help it deliver a transparent, credible and efficient electoral process.
