The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks.
The commission also introduced a self-service online registration option to make voter registration easier for eligible Nigerians.
INEC announced the changes on Friday through its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
New Deadline Set for July 24
The commission shifted the registration deadline from July 10 to Friday, July 24, 2026.
According to INEC, the extension followed a review of the exercise and feedback from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
The commission said the decision will give more eligible Nigerians enough time to register before future elections.
“The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable chance to be included in the Register of Voters.”
INEC Launches Online Self-Service Registration
INEC also announced a new self-service registration platform for first-time voters.
The service will go live on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through the commission’s dedicated CVR portal.
The platform will allow eligible Nigerians to begin and complete their voter registration using their personal devices.
According to the commission, users can also complete biometric capture without visiting an INEC office.
Technology to Improve Registration
INEC said the new platform includes identity verification, biometric validation and other security checks.
The commission explained that the system will protect the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
It added that users will find a step-by-step registration guide on the CVR portal.
INEC Urges Nigerians to Register
The commission encouraged Nigerians who have not registered to take advantage of the extended deadline.
It also urged eligible voters to explore the new self-service option.
INEC said it remains committed to delivering a credible, inclusive and technology-driven voter registration process.
