Fenerbahce head coach Ismail Kartal has resigned just minutes after the club’s draw with Roma in their Champions League opener.
Kartal announced his decision during his post-match news conference. He also said he does not intend to return to the club in the future. The 65-year-old returned to Fenerbahce for a fourth spell as manager in June 2026. His appointment came as the club prepared for its first Champions League campaign in 18 years. However, his latest spell has lasted only three months. Fenerbahce currently sit ninth in the Turkish Super Lig after two wins and two defeats.
Kartal thanked the players and club president Aziz Yildirim before announcing his resignation.
“As of this evening, I congratulate my players and resign from my position,” he said.
“I made this decision to pave the way for my club.”
Kartal added that he had resigned to help the club, players and whoever takes charge next. He also indicated that he did not plan to return to Fenerbahce.

Club President Rejects Resignation
Yildirim, however, has refused to accept the resignation. The club president said Kartal remains in charge and called on the Fenerbahce community to support him.
Yildirim later revealed that Kartal cited the pressure surrounding the job as one reason for his decision. He also pointed to an incident during the Roma match in which a bottle thrown from the stands struck him.
Fenerbahce said the spectator involved had been identified and banned from the stadium. Yildirim also criticised the growing criticism from supporters and the media. He urged both groups to respect Kartal and uphold the club’s values.
