Italy Suspends Defence Deal With Israel Amid Rising Tensions

Rome halts military cooperation as diplomatic friction escalates.

Italy has suspended its defence cooperation agreement with Israel, signaling a sharp shift in relations between the two allies.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed that her government has frozen the automatic renewal of the deal, which covers the exchange of military equipment and defence technology collaboration. She said the decision was taken “in view of the current situation.”

The move follows a series of diplomatic tensions between the two countries. Italy recently accused Israeli forces of firing warning shots at a convoy of Italian peacekeepers in Lebanon, damaging a vehicle but causing no injuries. In response, Rome summoned Israel’s ambassador in protest.

Tensions escalated further after Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani publicly condemned Israeli military actions in Lebanon, describing them as “unacceptable attacks” on civilians. Israel, in turn, summoned Italy’s ambassador over those remarks.

Italy has traditionally been one of Israel’s strongest allies in Europe, making this suspension a notable development. The defence agreement had facilitated cooperation in military research and technology for years.

The decision comes amid broader regional instability, with ongoing conflict involving Israel and armed groups in Lebanon drawing international concern.

While there has been no immediate response from Israeli authorities, the suspension reflects growing unease within European governments over the situation.

As diplomatic strains deepen, Italy’s move signals a potential recalibration of its foreign policy stance in the Middle East.
