The Manchester United winger scored a stunning late goal to give Ivory Coast a crucial victory over Ecuador.
Ivory Coast made a winning start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after Amad Diallo scored a superb 90th-minute winner to secure a 1-0 victory against Ecuador in Philadelphia.
The substitute curled home a brilliant finish after a powerful run from Wilfried Singo, ending Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten streak that stretched back nearly two years.
Ecuador came close several times, hitting the woodwork on three occasions through John Yeboah, Alan Minda and veteran striker Enner Valencia. Ivory Coast also threatened, with Elye Wahi striking the crossbar during an evenly contested match.
The victory gives Ivory Coast a strong chance of progressing from Group E, which also includes Germany and Curacao. A win in their next match could move them closer to a historic first appearance in the World Cup knockout stages.
Diallo’s goal continues his impressive form for the national team after also scoring the winner in a pre-tournament friendly against France earlier this month.
Ivory Coast now turn their attention to a crucial clash with Germany, while Ecuador will look to bounce back against Curacao in their next group-stage fixture.
