Japan fight back twice to hold Netherlands

Daichi Kamada’s late goal earned Japan a valuable point in a dramatic 2-2 draw with the Netherlands.

Japan and the Netherlands shared the spoils in one of the most entertaining matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, drawing 2-2 in Dallas.

After a goalless first half, Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring in the 51st minute with a powerful header from Ryan Gravenberch’s cross. Japan responded quickly through Keito Nakamura, who fired home just six minutes later.

The Dutch regained the lead in the 64th minute when Crysencio Summerville produced a composed finish inside the box. However, Japan refused to give up and found a dramatic equaliser in the 88th minute as Daichi Kamada redirected Koki Ogawa’s effort into the net.

The Netherlands created the better chances early on, with Donyell Malen forcing several saves from goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Japan, however, grew stronger as the match progressed and were rewarded for their persistence.

The result gives both nations a point to start their World Cup campaign, with Japan celebrating a hard-earned comeback against one of Europe’s strongest teams.
