Jason Derulo Denies Credit Claims in ‘Savage Love’ Court Battle

Singer Testifies in Los Angeles Court

Jason Derulo appeared in a federal courtroom in Los Angeles and rejected claims from a guitarist-producer. The case centers on his hit song “Savage Love.”

Derulo said the guitarist, Matthew Spatola, “created nothing” on the track. He told jurors that he hired Spatola only as a session musician in 2020.

Dispute Over Song Creation

Derulo said he already built the foundation of the song before Spatola joined the sessions. He explained that the track used the viral “Laxed – Siren Beat” by Jawsh 685.

He also said Spatola only played guitar and bass under his direction. Derulo insisted he controlled the creative process during the recording sessions.

Spatola, however, claims he helped shape key parts of the song. His legal team argues he contributed to the instrumental structure and deserves credit.

Conflicting Testimonies in Court

Spatola’s lawyer challenged Derulo’s version of events. He argued that Derulo could not realistically “sing” complex guitar arrangements.

The lawyer also said Spatola helped build a key pre-hook section. He claims this contribution formed part of the song’s identity.

Derulo’s legal team responded that the singer spent far more time developing the track. They also emphasized that Jawsh 685 provided the main creative foundation.

Financial Stakes and Royalties

Spatola received $2,000 for his studio work. He did not sign away rights to songwriting credit or royalties, according to his legal team.

He now seeks official recognition as a co-author of “Savage Love.” He also wants a share of future earnings from the song.

If the jury rules in his favor, the court will move to a second phase. That phase will determine possible financial damages.

Next Steps in the Trial

Derulo is expected to return to the witness stand. Cross-examination will continue after his scheduled appearance at the Met Gala.

The case remains ongoing as both sides prepare further arguments.
