Jürgen Klopp is still waiting for his first victory as Germany manager after Greece stunned the hosts with a 1-0 win in the Nations League on Sunday.
Klopp suffered his first defeat in charge in only his second match as Germany coach, following Thursday’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands. Germany dominated possession and created pressure in Augsburg but failed to find the breakthrough before Dimitrios Kourbelis struck in the 74th minute. The Greece midfielder’s effort from the edge of the box took a deflection off Germany captain Joshua Kimmich and found the net, leaving the hosts unable to respond.
“I could have lived with us not winning but you cannot lose such a game,” Klopp said after the match.
“We have been together for a week now, all mixed together, and that needs time. The result is not cool but it is absolutely part of the process.”
Klopp made several changes to the team that faced the Netherlands, while Florian Wirtz was introduced from the bench.
Despite their dominance, Germany could not break down a Greece side that had never previously defeated them in 10 meetings. Before Sunday’s match, Germany had won seven of those encounters while the other three ended in draws.
The defeat extends Germany’s run without a victory to four matches since their World Cup group-stage win over Ivory Coast.
Greece, meanwhile, moved back to the top of Nations League Group 2 after also defeating Serbia on Thursday. Their victory over Germany, ranked 12th in the world, was also their biggest win since defeating England in 2024.
