Kola Oyewo Dead: Veteran Nollywood Actor Dies at 80

The Nigerian entertainment industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and scholar Dr. Kola Oyewo, who has died at the age of 80.

News of Kola Oyewo’s death was announced on Friday by actor Kunle Afod in a heartfelt Instagram tribute.

Afod praised the late thespian for his immense contributions to Nigerian theatre and film, describing his legacy as one that will continue to inspire future generations.

Oyewo was one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nollywood. Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, he began his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group and went on to become a household name in the Nigerian entertainment scene.

Many fans remember him for his iconic portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic play The Gods Are Not to Blame, a role that earned him widespread recognition across Africa.

He also appeared in popular productions such as Super Story and several Yoruba-language films that helped shape Nigeria’s movie industry.

Earlier in April 2026, Oyewo revealed that he had been battling prostate enlargement, a condition that significantly affected his ability to take on demanding acting roles.

During a visit by Kunle Afod, the veteran actor spoke candidly about how the illness reduced his presence on screen in recent years.

Beyond acting, Kola Oyewo made a lasting impact in academia. He earned a doctorate in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University.

Through teaching and mentorship, he helped nurture generations of actors, playwrights, and scholars.

While the cause of death has not been officially disclosed, tributes continue to pour in from colleagues, students, and fans celebrating a life dedicated to storytelling, culture, and education.

Kola Oyewo may have taken his final bow, but his influence on Nigerian theatre, Nollywood, and the creative arts will endure for years to come.
