Ghana have been dealt a major setback after midfielder Thomas Partey was refused entry into Canada before their opening World Cup match.
Thomas Partey was denied entry into Canada ahead of Ghana’s first game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The decision means the midfielder will miss the Black Stars’ opening fixture on Canadian soil, although he could still feature in Ghana’s remaining group-stage matches in the United States.
Ghana are scheduled to face South Korea in Boston on 23 June before taking on Croatia in Philadelphia on 27 June. Partey remains eligible to play in those fixtures if travel restrictions do not affect his participation further.
The decision has triggered strong reactions in Ghana, with Sports Minister Kofi Adams describing it as unfair. Adams argued that Partey has been charged but not convicted, and therefore should not have been prevented from entering Canada.
The incident is the latest immigration-related issue to affect participants at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Iraq striker Aymen Hussein was temporarily detained for questioning in the United States. Iran’s delegation and supporters have also faced visa and travel restrictions. Somali referee Omar Artan was also denied entry into the US despite holding valid travel documents.
Ghana will now prepare for their opening fixture without Partey, while officials continue to seek clarity on the decision.
