LAWMA Removes Illegal Structures at Alaba Rago
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority has cleared the Alaba Rago setback along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
LAWMA Managing Director, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday.
He said the exercise targeted illegal traders, squatters and unauthorised structures occupying the expressway corridor.
Government Enforces Environmental Regulations
Gbadegesin explained that persistent indiscriminate waste disposal and obstruction of sanitation activities forced the government to act.
According to him, traders and squatters had illegally occupied the setback area for years.
“Road setbacks are not designated for trading, habitation or related activities. Continued encroachment on such public spaces will not be tolerated,” he said.
He added that the operation aimed to restore environmental order and improve sanitation along the busy transport route.
Illegal Waste Handlers Also Targeted
The LAWMA boss said officials seized several carts used by illegal waste handlers and cart pushers during the enforcement exercise.
He noted that the action would strengthen structured waste management within the area.
Gbadegesin urged residents and traders to use approved markets and designated waste disposal channels.
He stressed that environmental responsibility remained important for a cleaner and safer Lagos.
Joint Task Force Conducts Operation
LAWMA carried out the operation alongside the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
According to Gbadegesin, authorities began the enforcement after occupants ignored a three-day removal notice.
He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to sustained sanitation enforcement and collaboration with relevant agencies across the state.
Alaba Rago Undergoing Modernisation
Alaba Rago remains one of Lagos’ major commercial hubs along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Ojo.
The market serves as a major centre for livestock and food trade, especially for northern traders.
Authorities are currently carrying out demolition and modernisation projects within the area to improve infrastructure and environmental standards.
