Leeds United moved up to third in the Premier League after a dominant 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at Elland Road.
Daniel Farke’s side produced a devastating 14-minute spell before half-time. Newcastle struggled to cope as Leeds turned the game into a one-sided contest. Leeds took the lead in the 32nd minute through a deflected effort. Ao Tanaka’s strike took two deflections off Sean Steur and Lewis Miley before looping into the bottom corner.
The hosts doubled their advantage just 2 minutes and 42 seconds later. Dominic Calvert-Lewin appeared to have scored with a header, but the final touch came off Jayden Bogle’s head.Calvert-Lewin did get his goal shortly afterwards. One minute into first-half stoppage time, the striker calmly finished across goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek to make it 3-0.
The goal also took Calvert-Lewin’s career tally against Newcastle to eight.Newcastle’s problems continued after the break as Leeds added a fourth. Substitute Noah Okafor collected the ball and calmly slotted it home to extend the hosts’ advantage.
The visitors eventually found a consolation goal in the 90th minute. Substitute Bazoumana Toure scored, but the goal came too late to change the outcome.
The victory takes Leeds to eight points and third place in the Premier League. They are now four points behind defending champions and league leaders Arsenal.
