Jorge Messi died in Rosario, Argentina, where he had been receiving medical treatment. His death comes after months of concern over his health, including during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Lionel Messi was visibly emotional during the World Cup. After scoring against Algeria, the Argentina captain broke down in tears and later explained that his emotions were linked to difficult personal circumstances away from football.
