Liverpool and Nottingham Forest shared a 2-2 draw at Anfield in a pulsating Premier League encounter. The result leaves both managers waiting for their first wins since taking charge of their respective sides this summer.
Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool twice found themselves behind and twice battled back, with Victor Munoz capping his full debut with a thumping equaliser eight minutes from time to deny Oliver Glasner’s Forest a famous win.
Forest deserved their first-half lead. Dan Ndoye slotted home midway through the opening period after being played in by Morgan Gibbs-White. Forest were the better side for much of the first half, with Jeremy Jacquet producing a superb block to deny Igor Jesus from close range and Ndoye heading narrowly wide from James McAtee’s clipped cross. Liverpool thought they had levelled through Florian Wirtz’s smart finish before the break, but it was ruled out for offside. Alisson kept Liverpool in the contest in stoppage time, pushing Igor Jesus’ effort onto the bar.
Liverpool drew level on the hour mark. Cody Gakpo spun Neco Williams and delivered a precise low cross that Alexander Isak tapped into an empty net. Anfield came alive and the home side looked capable of pushing for a winner.
Drama at the Closing Stages
Instead, Forest struck again. Liam Delap, the visitors’ new record signing, took a quick throw-in that Williams latched onto. When Alisson came out to challenge Williams, the goalkeeper caught the wing-back and referee Samuel Barrott awarded the penalty. The decision stood and Gibbs-White sent Alisson the wrong way to restore Forest’s lead.
Forest fans were dreaming of a third consecutive league win at Anfield. Liverpool had other ideas. Munoz, on his full debut, received Wirtz’s pass and lashed a strike off the crossbar and in to level with eight minutes remaining. As they had done at Newcastle the previous weekend, Iraola’s side refused to accept defeat.
Neither side found a winner and both managers remain without a win in their new roles.
