Maduka Okoye’s delayed arrival at the Super Eagles’ training camp in Uyo has sparked a wave of criticism. This comes as the goalkeeper is reportedly the final member of Nigeria’s squad to link up with the team.
Nigeria began assembling on Sunday ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. By Monday, 23 players had arrived and completed the squad’s opening training session, but Okoye was still absent.
The controversy intensified on Wednesday after videos circulated online showing Okoye with American rapper Cardi B at Milan Fashion Week. The 27-year-old was also involved in the presentation of Udinese’s third kit at the event.
Nigerian supporters and media figures questioned his decision to attend the fashion event while yet to report for national-team duty. Okoye and Cardi B had previously been photographed together at Paris Fashion Week earlier in the summer. His appearance in Milan on Tuesday night appeared to explain why he had not reached camp, even as the rest of the squad continued preparations for Friday’s match against Madagascar. However, the Super Eagles did not issue any public update explaining his absence or confirming when he was expected to arrive.
The lack of information drew criticism from journalist Samuel Areo, who said similar communication problems had affected the national team before.
Okoye has now reported to the Super Eagles camp, with Nigeria continuing its preparations for the upcoming qualifiers.
